Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 1 Jan 1931
"William Hoyt Allan, aged 87, died Wednesday morning in the Battle Creek Sanitarium hospital which he entered last August when his health became much impaired. He was born in Ellsworth Jan. 3, 1845, one of the twelve children of Martin and Lucy Allen, pioneers of the township. There he grew to manhood and for many years was actively engaged in farming. Some 12 years ago he retired, disposed of his farm, and removed to Battle Creek. During long residence in his native township he was most active in religious and civic affairs, a man who could always be depended upon to go the right thing at the right time. Since youth he was a member of the Ellsworth Presbyterian church and a member of the session for many years. He never lost interest in the community so long his home and frequently to visit, his last in June, when his health gave evidence of failing, altho he remained cheerful, which was true of him to the last. On Oct. 16, 1873, he was married to Miss Ella Brooke of Ellsworth, who survives with two sons, Alfred, of Battle Creek, George of Melbourne, Fla., and a daughter, Mrs. A. R. Lawrence, East Orange, N. J. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Robert Kirk, St. Paul, Minn., and five grandchildren. Farewell services were held in Battle Creek Thursday afternoon and the remains will be brought to Ellsworth for final services Saturday at 2 pm to the Presbyterian church, Rev. G. E. Brown of Ellsworth and Dr. S. W. Young, North Jackson being in charge. Burial in the Ellsworth cemetery."
