Dorothy O'Hara Downs November 20, 2007
Mrs. Dorothy O'Hara Downs, 86, of Solvay and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, died peacefully and surrounded by her children, on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Dorothy was born and raised in Niagara Falls, NY and resided most of her life in Syracuse. She was a graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. Dorothy had a Business Degree and a love for the English language. She taught business for a short while but spent the majority of her life raising her nine children and spending time with family and her many close friends. She was a golfer, tennis player and avid bridge player. She made the world's best strawberry jam. Dorothy was also a wartime volunteer in the Red Cross overseas. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Joseph J. Downs, MD, as well as her parents, James and Pearl O'Hara and her brothers James, Donald and Gerald.
Dorothy is survived by her brothers, Paul (Helen) O'Hara, Phil (Joan) O'Hara and Roger O'Hara as well as her nine children: Patricia Downs, of Alameda, CA, Nancy (Michael) Smyth, of Gorham, ME, Joseph (Joan) Downs, of Newfield, NY , James Downs, of Pompano Beach, FL, Richard (Nancy) Downs, of Syracuse, Thomas (Diane) Downs, of Columbus, OH, Dorothy Slater, of Solvay, Michael (Jean) Downs, of Syracuse and Barbara (Daniel) Capriotti, of Camillus. Dorothy adored, and is also survived by her 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Holy Family Church. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, 3700 W. Genesee St.
