Alexander was married to Helen Cassie, December 31, 1857, in Kemnay, Aberdeen, Scotland. Shortly after the marriage the couple immigrated to Dayton, Cedar, Iowa where they lived next door to Helen's brother William.
Helen and Alexander had a son, John Gray, in 1858. Helen Cassie died a few years later and Alexander remarried. His second wife was Ann Livingston Shearer, daughter of Walter and Euphemia (Murray) Shearer. They had five children together: Walter, Euphemia, Margaret, William, and Ann.
Alexander was a farmer and a miller.
