"According to "Index to Tennessee Confederate Pension Applications", page 68, William C. Clouse served in the 6th Alabama Infantry and applied for pension benefits in Marion County, Tennessee.

Pension application papers indicate William was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Alabama, Company D and enlisted in May of 1861, through the end of the war when Lee and Johnson surrendered. he was wounded in the Battle of Sharpsburg and his right arm was amputated to the shoulder joint. He was sent home on a 60 day furlough and assigned to post duty in Jacksonville after his return, and until the close of the war.

William was born and lived all of his life in the Shellmound area of Marion County. He was a farmer and according to his pension application owned no land, which would indicate he probably rented/leased or share cropped. William's wife was not named on his pension application but her age was given as 53 years in 1891. On forms required for recertification in 1894, William disclosed that his wife was an invalid and he was able to maintain his farm, from which he derived very little income, with the help of his son. By the time William completed forms for a review in 1903, he said he had no wife which would indicate she probably died between 1894 and 1903. His children were independent/married by that time, he was no longer able to work, and one of his daughters was keeping house for him.

William was known as "Billie" to the family. William had two marriages, the first to Elizabeth Rawlings, mother of his three children, who died in 1882, and the second to Sara C. ______, who died on January 25, 1899. Sarah would be the invalid wife mentioned in William's pension application. He died in Marion County, Tennessee and is buried in the Clouse Cemetery in Shellmound, Marion County, Tennessee, according to information obtained from the Ancestral file of the LDS (Mormon) Library, File v4.19___AFN:1BZG-HNC viewed and copied by Marilyn Graham on June 13, 1999. The submitter of this information is Anna Lee Welch (Weaver), Rt. 1, Box 55, Caryville, Florida 32427.

From the book "A Book of Remembrance of The Clouse Family Descendants of George Clouse, I" Compiled and Edited by Prietta Clouse Franklin Rt. 2 Box 408 Cookeville, Tennessee 38501:

"He lived on a tract of land deeded him by his father on November 21, 1887. The original Clouse lands are now partially buried beneath the waters of the Nick-a-Jack Lake.

William died April 24, 1908 in Marion County and was buried beside his wives in the Clouse Cemetery on a knoll overlooking the lake which covers the lands formerly owned by his family.'

Hi, Joyce. I was just reviewing some of my information and trying to find new info that's been posted, and I came across the memorial on Find A Grave for William C. "Billie" Clouse. It lists his father as George Washington Clouse, b. 1770. His father was actually George Washington Clouse, b. 1808, who was the son of Aaron Clouse and Mary "Polly" LNU.

A note in William C. "Billie" Clouse's memorial says that he was brother to George Buchanan Clouse, and George Buchanan Clouse's memorial says they were brothers, as well.

I have a copy of the obituary for George Washington Clouse (b. 1808) that lists his father as Aaron Clouse. I realize that obits are considered secondary sources, but as this is the only information available about his parentage other than the circumstantial evidence about where he lived and was raised, I consider it to be accurate.

Marion County, Tennessee census records of 1850 and 1860 verify that William C. "Billie" Clouse was the son of this GWC (b. 1808), rather than George Washington Clouse (b. 1770) that is listed in the memorial.

I would appreciate your making that parentage change on this memorial in the interest of accuracy. If you feel unable to change his parentage to this GWC (b. 1808), would you consider just removing the parentage information completely?

Pat Franklin wrote a great book, but in this instance her information is incorrect. A look at the 1830 Marion County, TN census record for George Clouse shows there was no male person b. ca. 1770 in that household - although there WAS a female (Mary "Polly", wife of Aaron). I have my own opinions about where the George Clouse b. 1770 was, but also only have circumstantial proof - but he was definitely NOT in Marion County, TN!
