Challis Messenger: Died -- At his home at the Challis Hot Springs on Friday, August 30th, 1912, at about one o'clock P.M. John Kirk, but whom we always called "Jack Kirk". Mr. Kirk was born on September 23rd, 1848, in Limerick county, Ireland. When 7 years of age he came to the United States with his parents and settled Pennsylvania. He came West when a young man, and was one of the earliest pioneer miners in Custer county, coming here in 1877. He followed mining until about twenty years ago, when he married Mrs. Nellie Beardsley who owned the Challis Hot Springs, and from this marriage he leaves, besides the widow, two sons and two daughters to mourn his loss. For many years Mr. Kirk has been a constant sufferer from rehumatism, so death came as a relief and released him from untold pain and suffering. Deceased was a good man, and a most highly respected citizen. He was Assessor and Collector of Custer county for two years. The funeral was held from the Odd Fellows' Hall on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 1st, and was largely attended. At his request his remains were interred in the Challis cemetery alongside of his old mining partner, Joseph Soucey, who died years ago.
