Elizabeth Ann Taylor was the first of nine children born to William Taylor (c.1794-1848) and his wife Sarah "Sallie" McLendon (c.1805-1865) of Anson County, NC.

Elizabeth married Joseph Steen (c.1813-1861) and they had nine children. Joseph was a son of Thomas Steen and his wife Elizabeth Hollifield. His younger brother Elias Steen (1821-1888) married Elizabeth's younger sister, Ellen Taylor (c.1820s-after 1880).

Elizabeth Ann Taylor and Joseph Steen's children were: Sarah Elizabeth Steen (1844-?, m. Robert Lee Taylor), William Thomas Steen (1845-1926, m. three times, went to Mississippi), Louisa Jane Steen (c.1847-?, m. William High), James Washington Steen (1848-?, m. Nancy Kiker), Mary Frances Steen (c.1850-?, m. Gen. Taylor Smith), Edmund Daniel Steen (c.1852-?, went to Texas), Susan Adeline Steen (1855-1925, m. Chapman L. Stanley), Laura Ellen Steen (1857-?, m. Augustus Sullivan), Emma Amanda Steen (1858-1937, m. Zachary Taylor Beachum).
