His death sparked awareness of Histoplasmosis(blackbird's disease). In late 1974, Ricky started developing flu-like systems that lasted for three months. In Early 1975, while sleeping on the couch at his home, he choked to death on his own vomit. He was rushed to the Emergency Room at Community Hospital in Mayfield, Ky, and was pronounced dead on arrival. Further investigations of his body revealed that he was suffering from histoplasmosis and sparked a major outcry to decrease the number of blackbirds across the Heartland.
