1290 Private J Marney, 2nd Battalion the (Queen's) Royal West Surrey Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Yorkshire about 19 Oct 1899, and arrived at Durban about 14 Nov 1899. Along with the 2nd Devons, 2nd West Yorkshire, and 2nd East Surrey, they formed the 2nd Brigade under Major General H Hildyard, part of the Ladysmith relief force. They fought at the battle of Colenso (15 Dec 1899), at Vaal Krantz (5 Feb 1900) and throughout the battle of Tugela Heights (14-27 Feb 1900), a series of military actions resulting in the relief of Ladysmith. After the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith, the battalion was part of the advance north to the Transvaal, including the seizing of Alleman's Nek. They were then in the Transvaal for some time, as garrisons on the Natal-Elandsfontein Railway and as helping to furnish the infantry of endless columns. Private Marney died of dysentery at No 1 Stationary Hospital, Charlestown, Natal. He was buried in Charlestown. His remains were later reinterred in Newcastle. He is also commemorated on the 2nd Battalion the (Queen's) Royal West Surrey Regiment Boer War memorial in the Holy Trinity Church, High Street, Guildford, Surrey, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/245949/).
