AUSTIN FLOOD DISASTER
On Sept. 30, 1911, the Bayless Pulp and
Paper Co. dam broke . This concrete
dam, built 1909, was nearly fifty feet
high: 534 feet long. Its failure sent
torrents of water and debris down
Freeman Run into Austin and Costello,
causing great destruction and killing
at least 76 people. This second worst
single - dam disaster in Pennsylvania
inspired legislation (1913) to regulate
the construction of dams in the state.

--Rev. Dr. Emory M. Stevens of Williamsport, Pa., in whose District in the Valley through which raged the waters from the broken Baylis Dam, writes from amid the ruins. We urge immediate attention to his appeal which follows: The pastor of the Austin Methodist Episcopal Church, the REV. E. E. HARTER, HIS WIFE, AND FIVE CHILDREN ESCAPED WHEN THE DAM BROKE. ALICE, four years old, heard the cry on the street, "The mill is on fire and the Dam has burst." She ran to the stairs, calling to her Papa to come quickly, This cry permitted the pastor's wife and three of the children to save their lives by ten seconds of time and ten feet of space. MARY EMMA, CLERKING IN THE POSTOFFICE, RAN OUT OF THE BUILDING, WHICH WAS AGAINST THE HILL, AS THE END WAS SMASHED IN, The two boys were in the lower part of town when they saw the buildings coming in advance of the torrent of water and ran for the hill. The youngest, FISHER, age 11, slipped back. His brother grabbed for his collar, missed and caught his ear, by which he pulled him to safety. GILBERT the oldest son, was absent from home. The family saved nothing except the clothing they wore. It was five hours before they got additional clothes or shelter. The parsonage and church, valued at $13,000, is so completely gone that the site cannot even be discerned. REV. HARTER IS HEROICALLY STANDING BY HIS WORK, BURYING THE DEAD, COMFORTING THE BEREAVED, ENCOURAGING THE SURVIVORS. Arrangements have been made to continue church services in the Swedish Church. Rev. Harter was the only Protestant pastor remaining in Austin. Costello has been half destroyed. Pastor Durkee and family were saved. Money is needed to aid these pastors and their people.
