She became Elizabeth Maloney's unofficial godmother after Lizzie, as she was known, lost her mother, Mary's sister, at age four. When Lizzie and her family left St. Albans, VT for Kansas, Mary moved with them. Her bond to Lizzie must have been quite strong, as she remained with the Maloney family throughout her life.
