Maria del Carmen Ortega was born on March 14, 1875, in Magdalena, Sonora, México to Tomás de Jesus David Ortega and Maria Carmen Sortillón. She was one of twelve children, she being the second.

She lived a good portion of her childhood in Magdalena, but about 1895, her family moved to Santa Cruz, Sonora. There she met her husband, Miguel Fierro. They were married on January 04, 1922, at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, Sonora, México.

After their marriage, they moved to Los Angeles, California, where they lived the rest of the lives. Maria del Carmen died on September 16, 1962.
