5448 Corporal L Conroy, 1st Battalion the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Bavarian on 10 Nov 1899, arrived at the Cape about the 28 Nov 1899, and was sent on to Durban. Along with the 1st Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 1st Border Regiment, and 1st Connaught Rangers, they formed the 5th Brigade under Major General Fitzroy Hart. They fought at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899, at Venter's Spruit on 20 Jan 1900 and at the Battle of Tugela Heights 13-27 Feb 1900, the final and successful breakthrough to Ladysmith, including the capture of Pieter's Hill. After the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith, they were part of the advance north to the Transvaal and fought at Alleman's Nek, 20kms west of Volksrust, on 11 Jun 1900 (3 killed, 17 wounded). Corporal Conroy was one of those killed in the action. He was buried on the battlefield. His remains were later reinterred at Volksrust. He is also commemorated on the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Boer War memorial on the Fusilier Arch, St Stephen's Green, Dublin, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=142).
