"Newark - Mrs. Harriet Hoag, whose death was noticed in last week's Gazette, was born in July, 1813, on the farm and in the same house where her nephew, B. Pliny Foster, new resides. Her father, Elder Pliny Foster, was one of the first pioneers of this town. He came when all was covered with forest and took up large tracts of government lands. Mrs. Hoag's whole life was spent her until thirteen years since, when she went to Rochester to live with her niece, Mrs. B. A. Meade. She was one of the first to unite with the Newark Presbyterian society after it was organized in 1825. There was then no church building. They worshipped in the village school and Soverhill school house alternatively. Her first husband was Joseph Riggs of Newark. Two children were born to them, Celinda and Susie. The former died at the age of sixteen. The latter many will remember as the preceptress of our academy for eight years. A lingering sickness and death terminated her school work. Mrs. Riggs married Mr. Samuel Hoag of Newark with whom she lived until his death some twenty years since. Her step-children were Mrs. E. P. Soverhill of Newark and Hon. Jefferson W. Hoag of Lyons. One sister remains to mourn her loss, Mrs. Dr. Blanchard of Delevan, Wisconsin, who is ninety-three years of age. Her brothers, Daniel Foster died many years since, and B. D. Foster of this town, four years ago." (Aug. 26, 1903, The Weekly Gazette of Arcadia, NY)
