Richard had been convicted of larceny in 1810 and his original sentence of death was commuted to transportation for life. He arrived in Australia in 1812. In 1817 he was sent to the Lachlan River with horses and provisions for Oxley's expedition. He was most likely given his freedom as a reward for the work he did with Oxley and in pioneering the area west of Bathurst. He arrived in Van Diemens Land by the 1820s. He married Sarah Hodgetts and settled down to farming and innkeeping in the Norfolk Plains area. They had 7 known children together.
