The inscription says only, "The Epps and Russell families." This monument appears to be in cemetery lot 161, which was owned by Margaret Epps. The census of 1850 shows the household of Margaret and Jesse Epps, who were the parents of Arabella Epps. I suspect that this monument is for the family of Arabella Epps who in 1876 married Nelson Russell. Arabella Epps at the time was principal of Gaines High School, and the wedding was "a great gathering of the elite of colored society" (Cincinnati Commercial, July 13, 1876, p. 3).
