Joseph Frank "Chuck" Bennett passed away peacefully at his home in Sarasota, Florida, at 12:04 A.M., September 25, 2021.

Chuck was born on May 14, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska. He had blond hair & hazel eyes. He was the first of 2 children born to Joseph Glenn "Jack" Bennett and Margaret Jane Reisdorff. His brother, Jerome Allen "Jerry" Bennett, was born 2 years later in 1937.

Chuck attended Ashland Park Elementary School in Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated from the 8th Grade in May 1949.

Chuck attended South High School & Technical High School in Omaha, Nebraska & Boys Town High School in Boys Town, Nebraska. He graduated from Berkeley Evening High School, Berkeley, California, in June 1959.

Chuck graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Omaha, Nebraska, in December 1976, with a BS Degree in Criminal Justice. His major was Law Enforcement and his minor was Sociology.

Chuck first met his future wife, Mary Patricia Convery, in July 1953 at Omaha's Crosstown Roller Rink. He enlisted in the Navy on December 10, 1953. They met again in August 1955 when he was home on leave. In December 1955, Chuck proposed over the phone from Hawaii, sent her rings via mail, and they got married on May 12, 1956 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Omaha, Nebraska.

Chuck reported back to his duty station in Bremerton, Washington about a week later. On May 25, 1956, Chuck and Mary moved into an apartment in Bremerton. This was the first of many residences that Chuck and Mary lived in during his 20-year Navy career. Included were Neptune Beach, FL; Atlantic Beach, FL; Memphis, TN; Millington, TN; San Francisco, CA; Berkeley, CA; San Diego, CA; Omaha, NE, Newport, RI; Isle of Palms, SC; Charleston Heights, SC; Charleston, SC; Virginia Beach, VA; and finally, Norfolk, VA

Throughout his Navy career, Chuck served at various shore commands in San Diego, California; Treasure Island, California; Memphis, Tennessee; Charleston, South Carolina; and Norfolk, Virginia. He served on board USS King County (LST-857); USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42); USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865); USS Furse (DDR-882); USS Manley (DD-940); USS Casa Grande (LSD-13); USS Pocono (AGC-16); USS L.Y. Spear (AS-16)

Chuck received a permanent appointment to Chief Radarman (RDC), November 16, 1968 on board USS POCONO (AGC-16)

Chuck was awarded his 4th Navy Good Conduct Award on January 3, 1971.

Chuck transferred from active duty to the Naval Fleet Reserve on December 18, 1973 on board USS L. Y. SPEAR (AS-36)

Chuck's Specialty Fields while in the Navy were: Radar, Electronics, Career Counseling, Race Relations and Drug Education Specialist.

In 1971, in Charleston, South Carolina, Chuck was a coach for the Hunley Park Little League Baseball Team, the Hunley Park Phillies.

After Chuck retired from the Navy in 1973, the family moved back to Omaha. He became an insurance agent with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He specialized in estate planning and business insurance. During this time he also attended college at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He received his degree in December 1976. In August 1978, the family moved to Sarasota, Florida. Mary's parents moved to Sarasota in August 1983. Chuck and Mary were caregivers for them until her father died in 1992 and her mother died in 1999. In May 2000, Chuck and Mary moved to Hanceville, Alabama. And then in May 2008, they moved to Noblesville, Indiana. Finally, in 2010, they moved back to Sarasota to live out their lives.

In Florida, Chuck graduated from the National Polygraph Institute in Miami. In Sarasota, Chuck opened "J.F. Bennett & Associates", a polygraph service of commercial and criminal testing. Chuck was a member of the Florida Polygraph and American Polygraph Associations. As a licensed polygrapher in Florida, Chuck provided testing in the areas of pre-employment, periodic and specific incidents. Chuck was also employed as a representative for the Armed Services Newspaper Corporation.

Chuck and Mary were the proud parents of 5 children: Mary Kathryn "Kathy", Michael Joseph, Patricia Joann "Patti", Theresa Anne, and Barbara Jean.

Chuck enjoyed his daily scratch-off tickets, a fine cigar, fishing, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Chuck was a devout Catholic throughout his lifetime and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Chuck and Mary were deeply involved in Marriage Encounter, where they made many lifelong friends. Mary passed away at the age of 81 on March 29, 2018 in Sarasota.

Chuck is survived by 4 children: Mary Kathryn, Barry, Wales; Patricia Joann, Fishers, IN; Theresa Anne, Sarasota, FL; and Barbara Jean (Daniel) Schueler, Huntersville, NC; 12 grandchildren: Rachael & Max Rosser; Nicolette Bennett; Alex, Michael and Jonathan George; Jacob and Justin Souders; Elizabeth (Michael) Hendrickson; Samuel, Zachary and Abigail Schueler; and 5 great-grandchildren: Michael Hendrickson II, Lynzie Hendrickson, Kinleigh Souders, Justin Souders and Sarah Ruth Holloway. He is also survived by a step-sister, Berneice Bokelman Keller; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to his wife, Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Jerome Allen Bennett; half-brother, William Bokelman, Jr.; and his son, Michael Joseph Bennett.

Chuck's Memorial Service will be at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Florida, 11:30 am on Tuesday November 30, 2021. It will last approximately 30 minutes and will be a full military honors ceremony. Anyone is invited to come and pay their last respects. May he Rest In Peace.
