Born Herbert Eugene Caen in Sacramento, California, he entered the newspaper business shortly after his graduation from high school when he was hired as a sportswriter for the Sacramento Union. First published on July 5, 1938, his column titles "It's News to Me," quickly became a staple of the newspaper and would continue to published six days a week for over fifty years until 1991, when he cut back to only five days a week. In addition to his column, he also wrote several books about San Francisco including "Baghdad-by-the-Bay" (1949), "Don't Call it Frisco (1953), and "One Man's San Francisco" (1976). In 1996 he received a special Pulitzer Prize honoring him for all of his work. Later that same year, the city of San Francisco declared June 14th as Herb Caen Day.
