Attorney Col. Allan MacFarlan (1819-69) (Princeton 1844, magna cum laude, valedictorian), was the son of Robert (1785-1841) and Janet Taylor MacFarlan (1788-1863), of Gorelock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was president of Cheraw and Darlington Railroad Co., 1856-69, member of the South Carolina legislature, 1858-59, and a colonel in the State Militia. He owned Westmoreland, Montrose, and Shandon plantations. He married 1854, Julia Gamble (1824-67), second daughter of John Grattan (c1779-c1852) and Nancy Peyton Greenup Gamble (1791-1870), who was born probably in Tallahassee. They lived in Cheraw, S.C. Their six children were Nancy Greenup (1854-1944), Janet Taylor (1859-1930)(d.unm), Robert (1859-60), Judge Robert (1862-1924), Rev. Allan, Jr. (1864-1938), and Julia Gamble MacFarlan (1867-1937)(d.unm).

Nancy Greenup MacFarlan (1854-1944) married in 1876, Senator John Laurens Manning Irby (1854-1900), of Laurens, S.C. They lived in Laurens. He was an attorney, U.S. Senator, 1891-97, and a lieutenant colonel in the South Carolina militia, 1877-. Their seven children were Julia Patricia (c1877-1957); William Cannon (1879-1955); Gary Pope (1884-1914); John Lyllian MacFarlan (1885-1960); Pierce Butler (1888-1942); Henry Grattan (1890-1917); and Catherine Hagnere Irby (c1893-) who married Robert Mosely. William Cannon Irby (1879-1955) married Mary Caroline Stevenson (1882-1947) and lived in Alabama. Two sons were Francis L. (1911-83) who married Virginia F. (1913-87) and had Cleveland Irby; and William Cannon Irby, Jr. (1920-94). John Lyllian MacFarlan Irby (1885-1960) married Marjory Evans (c1892-) and lived in Columbia, SC. Their children were John Lyllian MacFarlan, Jr., Nancy MacFarlan, Helen Lightbourn (1922-2014), and Evans Irby (1925-98). Pierce Butler Irby (1888-1942) married Mary Archer (1892-1981). Their son, Col. Pierce Butler Irby, Jr. (1918-2004), served in the Army in WWII and married Marian Genevieve Cameron (1918-88), daughter of Alton M. (1891-1959) and May McKay Cameron (1893-1990). Their children are Susan M., Dr. Pierce Butler, III and John A. Irby.
