Obituary:

Bishop Samuel Dunbar, born September 2nd, 1953 in Newark, NJ to the late Sampson Dunbar and Minnie Pearl Dunbar. He was educated within the Newark Public School System and continued his education at Seton Hall University, where he majored in Accounting. At a young age Bishop Dunbar displayed an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit; young Samuel (known as T.C.) was impacted by a speech from the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King visited his school and challenged students to "be the best you can be in life" ~ those words ignited passion and a deep desire to "be the best he could be". From that moment Bishop Dunbar began living his life with purpose; he began learning trades and sat at the feet of electrical engineers, mechanical technicians, carpenters and anyone who would impart knowledge. Before long, Bishop Dunbar met Mr. Cyril Reed, an Engineer who admired the tenacity and zeal of Bishop Dunbar; Cyril decided to mentor and teach everything he knew about electrical engineering. Bishop Dunbar learned all he could and began to display great skill and knowledge in Electrical Engineering.

At a young age he worked with his mother in ministry (Holy Ghost Prayer Tower, Newark NJ.) He assisted in every area of ministry; he served as Deacon, musician and trusted servant; his skills were boundless. His training became very resourceful with construction, electrical work, plumbing and maintaining the structural edifice. During this season of life, he began assisting various Pastors, leaders and anyone he knew in need of help with repairs; no job was too small or too big. He had the heart of a true servant and was not satisfied unless he was helping someone. He would joke, "If I can't fix it – I'll patch it". He had a way of turning a stressful situation into laughter; Bishop Dunbar would put a smile on any face, he turned your frown into a smile.

September 1975, He married the love of his life, Cynthia Joan Ellis. He would say, "she's the cream in my coffee" and the "butter in my butter pecan ice-cream". He loved his wife dearly. They remained united in marriage and friends for 44 years; to this union they were blessed with two sons, Daniel and Darryl. After his marriage to Cynthia, Bishop Dunbar began to work with his Father in Law, Bishop Carl Ellis, Sr. at the House of Prayer Church, Jersey City, New Jersey. He sensed help was needed, the ministry was going through an expansion project. His skills as a licensed "Black Seal Engineer" were resourceful; he would work all day for the Newark Board of Education and immediately went to the church to assist his father in law with their expansion project. God blessed the work of his hands. He became known as the "Construction Man" for the saints. He continued to serve in various areas of ministry; Organist, Elder, Teacher, Trustee and church "Caretaker". He was full of energy and his busy schedule did not prevent him from doing what he loved most, playing lead guitar for the notable quartet "Rugged Cross". He enjoyed every moment of travel, singing and playing guitar with Walter Chisholm and members of the Rugged Cross.

The Lord continued to bless the work of his hands, yet he wanted more from life. Bishop Dunbar truly believed in obtaining God's best and wanted to be the best example for his sons. He and his wife started many businesses, C&S Cleaning Services, T.C. Handyman Service and more. He taught his sons many technical skills and insisted, "use your skills, be resourceful". After 25 years of service to House of Prayer Church, the Holy Spirit led Bishop Dunbar to return to his humble beginnings, Holy Ghost Prayer Tower. There he began to help his mother in ministry. Within a year, he was installed as Pastor of Holy Ghost Prayer Tower, officiated by his Father in Law, Bishop Ellis. The Lord blessed and a new edifice was purchased on East 10th Street, Newark, NJ. The Ministry was built on Love and serving the community where it was needed most, (food pantries, clothing and basic needs). Many souls came to Christ because Bishop Dunbar was a reflection of God's Love. Bishop wanted to give everyone a "second chance and leg up". Bishop Dunbar was overjoyed and fulfilled knowing lives were changed because of the power of God was at work.

Within a few years, he felt the leading of the Holy Spirit, saying "there are more souls to reach". He endeavored to reach more souls for Christ, and that is what he did. He opened his heart, and would say, "Love and Helping others is the greatest tool for soul winning." He gave love away. Bishop believed LOVE was more than words, "it's ACTION"! He would say, "don't tell me you love me and won't help me". He lived a balanced life; he truly loved his wife, sons and family, he loved the people of God, he loved laughter, he was a jokester at heart, loved to travel, loved music, he had every gadget known to man, he loved shoes, loved a good meal, loved milk and cookies, he loved learning, he truly LOVED and adored his grandchildren, but most of all he loved His God. Last month, Bishop Dunbar completed his studies and was awarded his Masters Degree of Religious Education from Divinity Bible Institute, East Orange, NJ.

His transition leaves to mourn his loving wife Cynthia, sons Daniel and Darryl, daughter in love Shonda, grandchildren, Jasiah , Xavier and Danay. His mother Minnie Pearl Dunbar, brothers Roy and Jospeh, sisters: Ethel, Bernice, Thelmeyca. Mother in Love – Jessye B. Ellis, 7 sisters in love, 7 brothers in love, beloved members of Holy Temple Church, Uncles, Aunts, many nieces, nephews, a host of cousins, extended family and friends.

Always in our hearts, so long for now, we will celebrate together again! Bishop transitioned from Labor to Reward on Friday April 17, 2020 at home, with his loving family at his bedside.
