BOWERS.--Jerome E. "Choke" Bowers Sr., age 82, of 25 Morgan Avenue, Ridgway, died Friday morning at St. Marys Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born February 14, 1917, in Ridgway, son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Maybank) Bowers. On January 24, 1947, he married Dorothy L. Gardner, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard "Bill" Bowers; a daughter, Barbara Plyler, both of Ridgway; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Eckert, St. Marys. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerome Edward "Jerry" Bowers, Jr.; a daughter in infancy; and a brother, John "Jack" Bowers. Mr. Bowers was a lifelong resident of Ridgway. He was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Ridgway Servicemen's Burial Detail, FOP, DAV, and the Second Ward Hose Hall. He was also a member of the American Legion, Eagles, VFW, Moose and Elks Club, all in Ridgway. He was a Gold Star Father and volunteered in the dietary department of Elk County Regional Medical Center. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army 7620 Tank Battalion. Mr. Bowers was a painter most of his life and retired as business agent for Fritz Johnson & Sons. A Mass of Christian Burial for Jerome E. Bowers, Sr., will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Leo's Catholic Church with Msgr. Joseph Bobal officiating. Committal will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Meehan-Shilk Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday. Military honors will be accorded by the Ridgway Servicemen's Burial Detail. Memorials may be made to the Ridgway Servicemen's Burial Detail, 307 Vernon Avenue, Ridgway; or to a charity of choice.
