John T. Toliver was the son of Moses Toliver (b. 1758 in Ashe Co., N.C.) and Elizabeth Stamper (b. bet. 1755 – 1770 in Ashe Co., N.C.),

He married Soloma C. Miller (b abt 1782 in N.C), daughter of Johann Joseph Miller and Anna Catherina Spiess, on the waters of Little River in Ashe County, N.C.

They had twelve children and of these, eleven reached maturity. Some of their names are:
