Mary was known as the yorkshire witch. She was Hanged for the murder of Rebecca Perigo she was tried at York ssizes. After her execution her naked body was put on display and about 2,500 people each paying threepence to see it. And finally,to satisfy a local superstion Mary Batemans skin was stripped from her body and distributed in piceces as souvenirs. Before she was sentence she announced that she was pregnant an immedite examination was ordered and, true to form she turned out to be lying. However if she was with child she would not have been hanged until she had had the child. If she did have a child it would have been given to the local catholic nuns tobe brought up if it was a girl she would be forced to be a nun as her mother was a witch and superstion that she may grow up as a witch and revenge her mothers execution. If a boy he was given to a local workhouse as he was no danger.
