Actress. She was best known to television viewers as Thelma Lou, the wholesome girlfriend of Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show" from 1961 to 1966. Her mom enrolled her in the Kansas City Conservatory of Music at the age of five, and she later sang on the radio and in supper clubs as a teenager. She later performed with the USO and appeared on the Broadway theatrical stage before signing with the Fox studio. In 1948, she made her acting debut in the film "Sitting Pretty." She went on to appear in such films as "June Bride," (1948) "Mother Is a Freshman," (1949) "Cheaper by the Dozen," (1950) "Meet Me in Las Vegas," (1956) and "The Singles." (1967) In 1952, she made her "small screen" debut on the television show "Chevron Theatre." Besides "The Andy Griffith Show," she went on to appear in such series or television movies as "Where's Raymond?" "M Squad," "Sugarfoot," "Family Affair," "My Three Sons," "Mod Squad," "Barnaby Jones," "Return to Mayberry," and "Matlock."
