Professional footballer. He played for Blackburn Rovers F.C. and his national side, England. A right-half, he joined Blackburn Rovers Football Club in 1951 and made his first professional debut aged only 16. Between 1950 and 1969 he made 581 appearances for his only Football League Club. At international level, he was capped six times for England's 'Under-23's', once for England 'B's' and 35 times at full international level. He made his international debut against Northern Ireland in November 1955 and won his last cap against Yugoslavia in May 1960. He was part of England's team at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. After Blackburn, he became player-manager of Morecambe, and also for Great Harwood, before retirement. The Blackburn End of the Blackburn Rovers Stadium was renamed in his honour and he was posthumously inducted into the Club's Hall of Fame in 2019.
