He was orphaned at the age of three and would later be adopted by Kermit Sage and Oma (Hunter) Sage.
He spent his childhood in Leiters Ford, graduating from Aubbeenaubbee High School in 1957. John joined the army in 1959 and served two years, at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. He married Margaret June Kreischer on Sept. 13, 1961 in Leiters Ford. They would eventually move to Culver and raise their four children. June preceded him in death in 2001.
John spent his entire career selling insurance. He worked for Prudential for several years.
He opened Sage's Culver Insurance Agency in Culver, with his wife June, in the late 1980's. John continued to run the business, after her death, until his retirement in 2004. He moved to Portland, Oregon in 2019 to be near his daughter.
John's passion was fishing. He traveled many years to Cass Lake, near Middlebury, to fish on weekends. He also loved to play Euchre. Many holidays and family gatherings were spent around the card table playing the game.
He is survived by his daughters, Melanie Denton of Culver, Colleen (Chad) Knepper of Plymouth, and Suzanne Sage of Culver. He is also survived by a sister DeEtta Bear of Fort Wayne, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He maintained a close relationship with his nieces Teresa Hunter, Connie Schultz, Patty Brewer, Kathy Melton and nephew Clarence Schubach until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son John Timothy Sage, sisters Joann Schubach Cota and Carol Schubach Hoover, and brothers Clarence Leroy Schubach and William Neff.
