Oliver B. Hayes' date of death is often found as November 14, 1858 - perhaps a misreading of the deteriorating inscription on his monument. The monument does NOT say 14 Nov - it says 1st Nov with the "st" being in very small letters and underlined.

I don't know as yet what Nashville newspaper this was clipped from nor the date of the paper. It was found in the Shields Papers at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Rokeby was torn down in December 1950 per a different newspaper article in The Tennessean that has a photo of the house partly demolished.

In an ad, headed "Rokeby for Rent" and published November 1865,the house was described as a "Large brick dwelling; 8 or 10 rooms".

The following is an excerpt from a letter written by Laura (Hayes) Shields to her sister-in-law Emily (McGavock) Hayes. The letter was dated February 28 - no year but thought to be about 1882-83. Laura described Rokeby as it was then.

"We wish to build this spring, or summer, & thought it might be pleasant & convenient to stay at Rokeby until our house was completed. Sister [Adelicia] and Corinne are willing for us to do so, if we can make the place habitable. It is now in ruins – so much [several words illegible] not be rented. It is for sale & it will certainly look much better occupied, with furniture in it. The locks are off the doors, the window glass broken, some of the sash gone. The house leaks badly, the paper torn & hanging from the walls, all covered with mould - & everything in a dilapidated exposed condition. I would like if Sandie could go out & see its present condition. Would you have any objections to our occupying it for a short time. I think it would be protection to the place if nothing else."

As well as I can determine, Laura and her husband, George W. Shields, Sr., purchased Rokeby from her siblings about 1883-84. Laura died there in 1892. Around 1893 their son, George Jr. received ownership and resided there with his family until about 1896 when they moved to a farm in Madison, TN. In May of 1901, George and wife sold Rokeby to J.H. Wiles, Jr.
