Pinckney Dispatch, Jan. 20, 1932
A long life of usefulness was brought to a close Monday when Mrs. John Dunbar was summoned by death.
Jane Birnie, daughter of William and Margaret Birnie was born Oct. 20, 1844 ar Old Deere, Aberdenshire, Scotland. She was one of 13 children, eight of whom are still living, James and Mrs. Annie Strickne of Scotland, George of New Zeeland, William of Kirkland, Washington, John of Lansing, Frank of Unadilla, Mrs. Belle Ware of Houghton, Washington and Mrs. Jessie Brown of Chelsea. Jane was united in marring to John Dunbar, June 9, 1866 to which union were born two daughters, Bell now Mrs. Wm. Smith of Kirkland, Washington and Maggie who died in infancy and one son, William of Jackson. Beside her husband and this son and daughter, three granddaughters survive, Ruth, Marie and Isabelle Dunbar of Jackson.
Born at a time and place when life was more or less of a struggle she knew at an early age the strength which grows with toil and at the same time she acquired those sterling moral virtues which characterised her whole life. She early identified herself with the Presbyterian faith and has long been a member of this church at Unadilla. Not long after their marriage the Dunbars decided that America offered opportunities not to be found in the homeland so they severed ties of kin and friendship and set out to build for themselves a new home to which end they arrived in Pinckney, May 22, 1873. During their long years spent in and near this village, Mrs. Dunbar proved herself a real helpmate, never shirking her share of life's burdens and yet saving time and strength to minister to the distressed.
The funeral was held from the home, Friday, Rev. E J Berquist of the Pinckney Congregational church and Rev. Rhermgens of the Unadilla Presbyterian church officiating. Burial was in the Pinckney cemetery.
