5274 Private W Arnold, 2nd Battalion the Devonshire Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Manilla about 20 Oct 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 15 Nov 1899. They were at once sent to Durban, and, along with the 2nd Queen's, 2nd West Yorkshire, and 2nd East Surrey, formed the 2nd Brigade under Major General Hildyard. They were part of the Ladysmith relief force and fought at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899. Between 16-24 Jan 1900 they were at Venter's Spruit and Spion Kop but not very heavily engaged. They were at Vaal Krantz 5-7 Feb 1900 and fought in the battle of Tugela Heights 14-27 Feb 1900, leading to the breakthrough to Ladysmith. They were part of the advance north into the Transvaal and then were employed on garrison duty at stations on the Natal-Pretoria Railway. Private Arnold died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 17 General Hospital, Standerton, Transvaal aged 21 years.
