3574 Private D Maher, 1st Battalion the Durham Light Infantry. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Cephalonia on 24 Oct 1899, arrived at the Cape about 18 Nov, and was sent round to Durban. Along with the 2nd Scottish Rifles, 1st Rifle Brigade, and 3rd King's Royal Rifles, they formed the 4th Brigade under Major General N G Lyttelton. They were part of the Ladysmith relief force and fought at the battles of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899, at Spion Kop on 24 Jan 1900, at Vaal Krantz 5-7 Feb 1900 and in the Battle of Tugela Heights, the final breakthrough battle to Ladysmith 13-27 Feb 1900. They were then employed on guarding the railway lines. Private Maher died of dysentery at 4 Stationary Hospital, Standerton, Transvaal aged 28 years. He is also commemorated on the Durham Light Infantry Boer War memorial on the Palace Green, outside Durham Cathedral, Dun Cow Lane, Durham, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/145143).
