A log truck driver was killed Monday afternoon when his rig ran off the road and overturned on Trudie Road.
Rufus Travis Bullard, 60, address unavailable, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Pierce County Coroner Milton Harper.
The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. just inside Pierce County at the Pierce-Brantley County line.
The cab of the truck was crushed in the accident and emergency personnel worked in difficult conditions to free the victim from the wreckage.
Witnesses to the accident say the driver appeared to be driving at a high rate of speed and did not apply brakes going into the curve. There were no skid marks on the highway.
The truck was fully loaded with pine logs at the time of the accident.
Bullard was reportedly en route to Gilman Wood Products of Blackshear. He had reportedly picked up the load from a tract of timber off Caney Bay Road in Brantley County.
The truck, owned by Mullis Logging of Hoboken, was traveling east bound on Trudie Road. After leaving the roadway, the truck overturned and the shoulder of the road was scraped clean and two of the three trailer supports holding the logs in place were snapped off.
The force of the accident shattered a small oak tree at the edge of the south ditch. The truck and trailer came to rest upside down in the ditch.
At least one of the logs was draped over the overturned wreckage.
The Georgia State Patrol is in charge of the investigation. An accident report was not complete at press time.
The Pierce and Brantley County Sheriff's Departments, the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department and the Hacklebarney and Bearville stations of the Pierce County Volunteer Fire Department and the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the scene of the accident.
