John Carroll Vanpool had an incredible pioneer spirit and drove 1200 head of cattle from Saline County, Mo to Marysville, CA and then by his own account returned from CA in 1854 by a steamer to Nicaragua in Central America and then he hired a small mule to carry him and baggage 12 miles to Lake Nicaragua, then by boat to Graytown and then he took another steamer through the Caribbean Sea, Yucatan channel and Gulf of Mexico and to New Orleans and from there up the Mississippi River to St. Louis and by rail home to the Russellville area. In 1864 when General Pleasanton issued a hurried call for volunteers to prevent an invasion into Missouri of General Price's army, he volunteered and was stationed at the Fairgrounds at Jefferson City. He was with Company H, 25th Militia. John Carroll was in the drugstore business for a few years in the Russellville area, but lived out the remainder of his life on his farm. His first wife was Mary Jane Robertson Oct 23, 1854 and to this union was born 2 children
1. David Frances Vanpool Oct 27, 1867 who married Sarah Buzan and went to Lewiston, Idaho.
2. The other child died in infancy.
After the death of Mary Jane he married Peggy Ann Merritt Oct 28, 1860 and to this union were born 9 children 4 of who survived.
1. Samuel Pellington Vanpool b: July 1, 1863 m:Sallie E. Hayse Buried Hopewell Cem.Barnett, MO
2. Elizabeth Lawcena Vanpool b: Aug 12, 1867 Marr: James Franklin Sanders, then Marr: CW Brown and after he died she remarried James Franklin Sanders and they are buried together in Chico Cem. Chico, Calif
3. Ora Ann Vanpool: b: Aug 9, 1878 m: William Compton. Buried Big Rock Cem. William is buried in Colorado even though his name is on the stone with Ora Ann Vanpool. Leslie Compton b: son of Ora Ann and William Compton is buried here in Big Rock also.
4. John Carroll Vanpool died Dec 3, 1914.
5. Emaline Vanpool born June 21, 1881 m: Emory A. Paul. Buried in Versailles Cem. Sec. Orig.
Peggy Merritt's brother William Merritt married Emily Rauschelbach who is a daughter of Ferdinand and Sophia Rauschelbach.
