He was on a Trail Drive with 150 head of cattle driving them with his brother John Carroll between Omaha, Nebraska and Colorado. That is where he died in 1859. He was single. In John Carroll Vanpool's biography which he wrote before he died he told of his brother Calvin being on the trail drive with him and saying Calvin died near Pikes Peak.
I have one source that says he may be buried in or near Denver, Colorado. The Leslie Family history says he died at this time.
Mary Jane Vanpool Short says he died in 1852 returning from the Gold fields in Calif with his father David Vanpool. Two different stories. She gives his name as William Carver Vanpool and this was her brother. It may be that she said his name wrong or was misinterpreted. In Murphy's book on the Leslies page 119 it says that William Calvin is not listed as an heir in his father's estate cofiming that he died prior to his father's death in 1862.

It also says he is buried near Denver, Colorado. P119
