Politician. He served as Prime Minister of Brazil from October 8, 1849 to May 11, 1852. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was a member of the Permanent Triune Regency from 1831 to 1835. He also served as a Brazilian judge, journalist and magistrate during his early political years. A member of Brazil's Conservative Party, he also served as a governor and senator. He is best remembered for implementing the policy of armed intervention by Brazil in the Rio da Prata and for his great oratory and political talent. Such talents were displayed in his crucial participation in the construction of democracy during the revolts and the Regency Period. He was made a Marquis, by decree of December 2, 1854 and left public life retiring to São Paulo.
