John is my Paternal Great Grandfather.

He was born about 1850 or earlier, either in Galway, County Offaly or Dublin City. (1901 and 1911 Census conflict each record)

I believe his parents are Edward White and Julia (currently researching her maiden name)

Married Mary Bridget Shaughnessy at Cloghan Catholic Church on the 30th of November 1872.

They had 12 Children:
John 'Jack' 1873-1951
Patrick 1879 - 1950
Joseph 1881-
Mary 1883 -
Thomas 'Jigsy' 1885 -1964
Kieran 1886 - 1975
Bridget 1887 -
James 1890 - 1960
Martin 1891 - 1923
Michael 1892 -
William 1893 - 1968 - My Paternal Grand Dad - and youngest child of John and Mary.
*2 Children passed away before 1911. (According to the 1911 Census)

1901 Irish Census: John and Family living in Cloghan, Offaly. Occupation: Mason. John's mother Julia is living with them.

1911 Irish Census: Living at 142 Main Street in Banagher, County Offaly. (Where Saint Paul's Parish Hall now stands) Occupation: Stone Mason at Banagher Cemetery. Birth year noted as 1849 by this census. Aged 62. Birth Place noted as Dublin City. 12 Children born 10 still living and 2 had died by the census.

During the Great War 8 sons and 2 son in laws of John and Mary's sons enlisted in the war - Connaught Rangers. Some fought in the British Army too.

Letter to, John William White. Privy Purse Office. Buckingham Palace. Sept 18, 1914. Dear Sir, The King has heard with the deepest gratification that you have 10 gallant sons and 2 gallant sons in law serving in the army. His Majesty sends you his congratulations, and hopes that you will convey the same to them, together with His Majesty's best wishes for their success, health and happiness in the noble career they have chosen. Yours faithfully, William Carrington Keeper of His Majesty's Privy Purse. Mr John White, Banagher, Offaly.

All of them returned home and survived the Great War.

On the 20th of April 1917, John passed away from Phthisis (Tuberculosis) at Birr Workhouse. It was handed down in my family he was buried at the Old Cemetery in Banagher - However there is no record of his burial. Maybe buried in the grounds at the Old Cemetery in Birr. My personal thinking is he is buried in the grounds of the Birr Workhouse. There's no records. So as a go between I have added John into the Birr Old Graveyard.
