5417 Private C Paul, 2nd Battalion the Northamptonshire Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War in Oct 1899. They joined the Kimberley relief force, being part of the 9th Brigade, formed of troops from the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, one-half of the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (other half being deployed in Kimberley) and the 2nd King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. They fought in the battles of Belmont (23 Nov 1899) and Enslin (25 Nov 1899). Private Paul was wounded at Enslin Station on 7 Dec 1899 whilst serving with the 11th Mounted Infantry. The battalion was then part of the main army advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria and in Oct-Dec 1900 was part of a column under Major General Douglas which operated in the south-west of the Transvaal. Early in 1901 the battalion was taken to the Central Transvaal, and along with the Wiltshire Regiment occupied posts on the line between Warm Baths and Pietersburg. They were mostly employed in this district till the close of the campaign. Private Paul was dangerously wounded at Sandbaker, Transvaal on 3 Jul 1901 and died of his wounds the following day. He was buried at Val Station. His remains were later reinterred at Standerton.
