John was born in Staten Island, NY and enlisted in the Marines 18 October 1967, at a recruiting office in Brooklyn.
He arrived in Vietnam 1 April 1968 and was assigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines and later was transferred to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, when the 27th Marines departed Vietnam.
John and Pvt Walter Green Jr of Baltimore, Maryland had been transferred from the 27th Marines to Echo Company. They both died the same day, as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body from an enemy rocket propelled grenade, 4 kilometers southeast of LZ Torch and 19 kilometers south southeast of the Khe Sanh Airfield, near the Laotian border, when the battalion was participating in Operation Maine Crag.
John was single and served his country for 1 year, 5 months and 4 days and was KIA #39,472. He had been in Vietnam for 11 months and 21 days.
John was 19 years, 11 months and 7 days old.
