Donald, (Skilly), Wagle
Donald, (Skilly), Wagle was born in Eureka to mother Wilma Wagle and father, William Wagle on October 10, 1921. He passed away unexpectedly on March 3, 2009 at his home in Fieldbrook. Skilly enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served unti11946. While in the Navy he served aboard several ships seeing combat firsthand in the South Pacific, having had one of his ships torpedoed, breaking the ship in half. He said he always felt lucky since he was aboard the half that remained afloat and was able to make safe harbor by backing up all the way to Australia.

In 1945, while stationed in San Francisco, Skilly proposed to his girlfriend Clara Eller of Fieldbrook. She accepted and they were married in San Francisco in 1945. They were married for 64 years.

In 1946 Skilly was discharged from the Navy and he and Clara moved back to the Wagle ranch in Fieldbrook where they leased the Christy Ranch from his brother-in-law Alex Christy and began "milking cows" which lasted for several years. While operating the dairy, Skilly also worked for Alex Christy running heavy equipment as well as running beef cattle on the original Wagle property. While working elsewhere Skilly built (and some cases had built) several houses on the original Wagle ranch living in each for a short time while the next house was being constructed. In all he built five houses which remain to this day on Wagle Lane.

After closing down his dairy operation, Skilly continued working in the lumber industry, operating heavy equipment. When the Redwood National Parks land acquisition was made and Louisiana Pacific's operations at Big Lagoon were forced to close, Skilly retired to his favorite past time of hunting with his nephew Richard Christy and friend Bill Hiscox, growing things and talking politics.

Skilly was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Sheila Ann Wagle Koonts and his two sisters, Audrey Kidwell and Wilma Webester and his brother Fred Wagle.

Services will be held at the Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E Street, Eureka on Monday, March 16, 2009 at 1:00 P.M.
