Enrolled, May 6, 1861, at New York City, to serve two years in the 20th NY infantry; mustered in as lieutenant-colonel, May 16, 1861; as colonel, May 1, 1862; resigned, July 4, 1862, at Harrison's Landing, VA; also borne as Franz and Weis; commissioned lieutenant-colonel, June 20, 1861, with rank from May 16, 1861, original; colonel, May 17, 1862, with rank from April 28,1862, vice Max Weber, appointed brigadier general.
