James Rice was a friend of the poet John Keats. Keats wrote letters to him and he is mentioned in stories that Keats wrote to others. Keats stayed with him on the Isle of Wight and called him "the most sensible, and even wise man of my acquaintance" and as "a friend to whom I am greatly attached." Charles Dilke referred to him as "Dear generous noble James Rice" and as "the best, in his quaint way, one of the wittiest and wisest men I ever knew." James Rice worked as a lawyer along with John Hamilton Reynolds and was chosen by George Keats to take over the legal affairs of George and Fanny Keats. Rice suffered from illness for much of his young life and died at the age of 40. The grave markers where he was buried were removed in the 1940s.
