Martin was born November 22, 1814, in Union Co (formerly Campbell Co) TN. His father Enoch was farmer and ran a mill. Although Martin's schooling ended when he was fourteen, he studied and became a teacher, surveyor, mathematician, and was known for his poetry. He is known as the "Bard of Lone Jack." He was also interested in politics. When the Republican party was formed in 1856, he joined. He later was unique in being the only one to vote for Abraham Lincoln in Cass Co. His obituary states, "Mr. Rice was fond of telling of the times, in 1833, when 'the stars fell.'" He published two volumes of poetry.

Martin Rice, author of "Rural Rhymes and Talks and Tales of Olden Times," familiarly called the "Sage of Lone Jack," Mo, celebrated his eighty-ninth birthday at his home in Cass county, Mo. surrounded by friends and relatives on Nov. 22. Rice is the oldest living pioneer of Cass county, having come to Missouri and settled at Lone Jack in 1832. He was born in Tennessee in November, 1814, and since that time he has seen 8 generations of his own kin grow up and pass away, some of them, while he still lives in peace and happiness, enjoying the companionship of his younger comrades, though some are gray haired with age, who constantly surround him. At his 89th birthday a few days ago there were seated at the table 15 friends and relatives of the kind old man who ranged in age from 60 to 85 years. . .

He came to Missouri when 18 years old and took up his home near where he died. He voted for Abraham Lincoln, his vote being, it is said, the only one cast for the emancipator in that part of the county. Since 1835 he voted at every presidential election.
