Philanthropist. Artur Bäckström bequeathed the Julita Estate in Sudermania (Södermanland) to the Nordic Museum of Stockholm. His birth was registered as in the marriage between wholesaler and tobacco manufacturer Johan Bäckström and singer Walfrida "Lily" von Ehrenclou. Bäckström was portrayed in the 1991 documentary family story "Famna livet" by Agneta Ulfsäter-Troell and in a 1992 book-based TV series. In the book and the TV series Arthur Bäckström acknowledged himself as an extramarital son of King Oscar II of Sweden-Norway and Walfrida , stating that the Bäckström family's purchase of Julita in 1876 had been financed by the royal family. He moved to Julita in 1888 and first lived at Wäsby villa which belonged to the Julita Estate. In 1891 he moved into the manor house at Julita and began to lease the estate in 1892 from the then owners of the tobacco company Wilhelm Hellgren & Co. His father was the sole owner of the tobacco company and when he died in 1902, he inherited the estate with full ownership. He began a military career but resigned from the Södermanland Regiment as a lieutenant in 1906. Therefore, he was generally called "Lieutenant" on the estate. During his time, the garden facilities and the manor area at Julita received their current appearance. Among other things, the Rosengården rose garden was completed in 1916, the gardener's home was built in 1923 and the greenhouse was rebuilt in 1918 after a fire the year before. The main building's loggia was built in three stages around 1898 to 1907, the carriage and stable wings were built in 1900 and 1905, the north wing and Åttkanten were rebuilt in 1919 to 1920 and the wall along the park's border with the old country road was built in 1926. His biggest project, however, came to be Julita Sconce. He was very interested in cultural history and had many old buildings moved from the estate's properties to the park area to build up his private open-air museum inspired by the Skansen establishment in Stockholm. In collaboration with the Nordic Museum, the facility was supplemented in 1926–1930 with a museum building and then with Skansenkyrkan (Sconce Church). His mother was friends with Skansen's and the Nordic Museum's founder Artur Hazelius. In 1902, Bäckström bought the exclusive urban property Rådjuret 14, address Grev Turegatan 68, in Stockholm and sold it in 1918 for SEK 140,000 to Maria Löwstedt, who gave it to the Edelweiss Association the very next day. The Chapel of St. Michael was decorated in the courtyard, which was consecrated in 1935 by Bishop Gustaf Aulén. Bäckström bequeathed Julita Estate to the Nordic Museum to preserve it and to "future generations give a faithful picture of how an old Sudermanian manor of considerable size looked during the end of the last and beginning of the present century." He died without ever having been married and was buried with his dogs at Julita Sconce on the shore of Lake Öljaren.
