He married Mary Barrett in Richmond, Virginia on 29 January 1851. They had three known children, two of whom died very young.
A farmer in Prince George's County, later in life he became a shipping and coal agent for railroad companies. It was in the course of overseeing a coal offload at Reiman's Wharf in Locust Point that he fell from a trestle and fractured his skull.
