Son of Major Boardman Bromhead and Frances (Gonville) Bromhead. His father was a major in the 62nd Regiment of Foot. He would marry Jane Ffrence on July 18, 1787 and have three sons: Sir Edward Ffrench Bromhead, second Baronet, Sir Edmund Gonville Bromhead, third Baronet and Reverend Charles Bromhead.

Gonville Bromhead attended Winchester College and the Military Academy in Little Chelsea. He traveled to American and fought with the British Army in several actions including the Saratoga Campaign of 1777. He also fought in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. He eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. He was created 1st Baronet Bromhead of Thurlby Hall on February 19, 1806 due to his service in the Irish Rebellion.
