Second of three sons (Edward, Edmund and Charles) of Lt. General Sir Gonville Bromhead and his wife Jane (Ffrench) Bromhead. He became the Third Baronet Bromhead of Thurlby Hall after the death of his brother in 1855. His father was the First and brother Edward was the Second Baronet. He served as a Major in the British Army and fought at the Battle of Waterloo.

On September 15, 1823 he married Judith Christine Wood. They had four sons and six daughters. One of his sons, Major Gonville Bromhead won the Victoria Cross for his part in the defense of Rorke's Drift (South Africa) in January 1879.

Major Sir Edmund Bromhead was buried in the same cemetery as his father, Lt. General Sir Gonville Bromhead.
