One of ten children of Major Sir Edmund Bromhead, third Bromhead Baronet of Thurley Hall, and Judith (Wood) Broomhead. Married Alice Marie Freckleton on October 5, 1876 in London, England. They had two sons: Major Richard Freckleton Gonville Bromhead (1877-1949) and Charles Edward Gonville Bromhead (1882-1891).

He had a distinguished career in the British Army fighting in the Zulu War (1870), Ashanti (1873-1874), and the Burma War (1887-1889). He also held the office of Justice of the Peace in Denbighshire. Col. Bromhead was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1898. He obtained the rank of Colonel in the South Wales Borderers.
