Maurice Carl Backs, 92, of St. Joe, Ohio, passed away on Monday, February 14, 2022 at The Gardens at St. Henry.
He was born on January 7, 1930, in St. Henry, to the late Aloys and Elizabeth (Guggenbiller) Backs.
In addition to his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Greg Gehle; his siblings, Harold (Gertrude) Backs, Art (Ruth) Backs, Donald (Frieda) Backs, Bernice (Adrian) Kaup, Alice (John) Fiely, Robert Backs, and a sister-in-law, Lois Backs.
Maurice served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he earned the rank, Corporal. Throughout his service, he earned the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and 2 Bronze Service Stars. Maurice also completed Ordinance Automotive School in Atlanta, Georgia. When he returned home, Maurice worked as a machinist for J & M Manufacturing, Coldwater Machine, and New Idea. When he was not at work, he could be found tinkering with things. He loved to take things apart and rebuild them. Several even referred to him as "Mr. Fix It." Maurice was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Catholic Knights of America in St. Joe, the church's men sodality, and the Fort Recovery American Legion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joe. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in St. Joe Cemetery.
Guests may visit with Maurice's family on Friday, February 18, 2022, from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and again on Saturday from 9:00 AM until 9:45 AM at Brockman-Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery.
