James started his service in the army at the age of 14 when he was employed at the Royal Military College (now RMA) in Sandhurst. He served his entire career here.
James married Mary Ann Turner Carroll at St Peter's on the 25th of June 1846.
After their marriage they lived within the grounds of the college. They had a daughter Elizabeth Mary who was born in 1863 and died in 1864. She was buried at Camberley.
James was discharged from the army in December 1863 and they moved to Cambridge Town (now Camberley). He was employed as a Sergeant Instructor for the local volunteer force after he retired.
They lived in Park Street in Camberley for the remainder of their lives.
Mary died in July 1895 and was buried at Camberley.
James died on the 26th of August 1914. He was buried at Camberley on the 29th of August.
