Jacob’s father, Peter, was 30, and his mother, Margaret, was 17 when he was born. He spent the early years of his life in North Carolina. He married Catherine Lorance on March 19, 1799, in Lincoln, North Carolina. They were to have a large family.

In 1802 Jacob and Catherine, Jacob's parents and many of their neighbors migrated from North Carolina to the area of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, with Col. George Fredrick Bollinger.   In 1825, Jacob and Catherine purchased land and relocated to Stoddard County.
