4548 Private T Bryan, 2nd Battalion the Northumberland Fusiliers. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Kildonan Castle in early Nov 1899, arriving at the Cape about 23 Nov 1899, and was sent round to East London under the command of General Sir W F Gatacre. They were part of the force that set out on 7 Dec 1899 to assault the Boer forces at Stormberg, a hurried operation that ended in defeat (12 killed, 70 wounded and over 300 taken prisoner). The remainder of the battalion were sent to East London to recuperate before being sent to Bloemfontein as garrison troops. At the end of Jul 1900 they were put into a brigade under Hart to assist in the persuit of De Wet. In Sep 1900 they were placed in a column under General Clements. In Dec 1900 they were encamped immediately south of Nooitgedacht Pass and four companies of the battalion were holding the ridges overlooking the camp and were attacked and captured by a very large Boer force. Private Bryan was wounded in the attack on 13 Dec 1900 (23 Nov on the South African Field Force Casualty Roll). He subsequently died of his wounds in 39 Stationary Hospital, Rietfontein, Transvaal.

He is not commemorated on the Newcastle upon Tyne Boer War memorial in the Haymarket, St Mary's Place, Northumberland Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/200052).
