Hattie was the child of Samuel Duggan and Mary "Matilda" Hetrick. She was raised by Matilda and her husband Abraham Miller.

At age 14, Hattie married Thomas Merrill Johnson in Fremont, Dodge, Nebraska, 28 November 1883.

Hattie and Thomas had nine children, eight daughters and a son: Myra Lucy, Eugenia Pearl, Julia Amelia (died young), Ruby Ellen "Nellie" (died young), Lorette P. "Laura", Alice Murriel, Napoleon Bonaparte, Anna "Marie", and Hattie Quintilla.

After divorcing Thomas in 1900, Hattie took her children west to Kalispell, Flathead, Montana, and met Frederick Newell Golden there in 1902. Eventually they were married and moved to the Spokane, Washington area, where their three children were born: Frederick Newell Jr., Floyd Orville and Florence Gertrude.

Hattie and Frederick raised their children near Spokane until she passed away.
